How to use this calculator

  1. 1

Choose the material form for reference.

  2. 2

Enter finished piece length and required quantity.

  3. 3

Optionally enter saw kerf and total setup allowance.

  4. 4

The total required length updates automatically.

About the calculation

Use this linear material requirement calculator for rod, round bar, hex bar, square bar, flat bar, pipe, tube and similar straight material. It calculates the total raw length required from finished part length and quantity.

Optional kerf and setup allowance can be included, while standard stock length is intentionally not required so the tool answers the first purchasing question: how much material is needed in total?

Calculation method

Formula and assumptions

Required length = (piece length × quantity) + (kerf × (quantity − 1)) + end allowance

This calculator answers how much linear material is required. It does not assume 3 m, 6 m or another standard stock length. Use purchasing stock lengths separately when placing the order.

Examples and guidance

  • Example: 100 pieces × 50 mm requires 5,000 mm (5 m) of finished rod length before optional kerf or setup allowance.
  • The animated bar represents the total required material split into repeated finished pieces.

Questions and answers

Do I need to enter a standard bar length?

No. The result is the total material length required from your finished piece length and quantity.

How is saw kerf included?

Kerf is added between consecutive pieces, so quantity minus one cuts are included in the material requirement.

Can I use this for hex bar, square bar and pipe?

Yes. The length requirement is independent of cross-sectional shape. Use the Metal Weight Calculator when you also need mass.
